Much of this volume of the Transactions is devoted to understanding the causes of — and devising remedies to — the Lundhill Colliery Disaster at Wombwell, Yorkshire, 19 February 1857. In that explosion, 189 men and boys lost their lives, leaving 90 widows and 220 orphans.
