Throughout, we find penciled cross-outs of whole sections of individual lines; addition of interpellated codewords; addition of phrases [e.g., `83: By clipper ship around Cape Horn; via an Francisco; direct; via Sail; Boston; New York] also, insertion of years 1880 1890 1900 1910 through 1921 in “Table of years from 1850 to 1891 inclusive” p 253. page note “General Market” includes penciled notation “see for genl use.”

This code has been ransacked for phrases and codewords; phrases relating to canal operations systematically removed.

Crossouts include these

ChuckThe demand is principally confined to the canal lines, and boatmen who are buying on vessel account to make freight.
ObliqueHas the weather put a stop to canal navigation in your vicinity?
OffscumIn consequence of the favorable winds prevailing, we look for a large fleet of vessels (known to be out) to arrive, and a corresponding advance in the price of canal freights.
OilyIt is very cold, and snow falling fast, which must check, if not entirely close canal navigation.
OintingAlthough very cold yesterday and last night, the weather is moderating to-day.
OintmentThe cold weather of yesterday and to-day, has probably pretty effectually put a stop to canal navigation for the season.
OnlyThe great depth of snow in this vicinity, has almost effectually blockaded the railroads, consequently we are without receipts, and nothing is being done in the way of shipments.
OpalWe are having a fine run of sleighing at present, which must have the effect to add materially to our receipts.
