My mission is simple. I wish to take total control over one typeface. My victim is Century Schoolbook, a serif typeface designed by Morris Fuller Benton in 1919. To be able to cut it up at will, create something new, make it illegible, and to just plain mess around with it.

All while majoring in Graphic Design, fellow students would claim ‘all you do is play around with type all day.’ Well, as a graphic designer in training, if that’s really all they thought I was doing, then why not show them up and take it to another level?

As a start, I am going to begin by experimenting with people’s names. The process is simple enough. First type out the name, then created outlines around each letter, then release the compound paths to give me total control over teach individual letterform. I will cut up each letterform into various forms and shapes, connect them at times, and allow them to flow across the page. Each will hold a sort of movement and balance in them. I will also create a document that is a sort of animation of the words being built, a film of the process.

From names I will expand my horizons on to sentences, and make extremely long works that flow continuously across the surface. From here I will start experimenting more with what I can do with the letterforms. Perhaps stacking words, or changing things up mid sentence.

I consider each word illegible blueprints of their former selves. Their uses could be endless. The ‘names’ could be used on personal accessories or equipment, such as stationary or even on shirts or handbags. The illegibility creates an almost hidden code of sorts, which only you can acknowledge and understand. The ‘sentences’ can expand even father. A large, long running mural on a wall, a blueprint of a story untold in a location that gives it meaning, etc etc.

All in all, I wish to try something new, that has not commonly been done before, and to have fun doing it.

Typographic Virtual Floor Plans


An assignment I enjoyed as a sophomore, in Design Stories, was to choose a word from a given list and alter the word somehow that was significant to the word’s meaning. I chose the expression ‘echoic memory,’ and with this I set out to make a new unique kind of design. I typed out the word rather large, using the font Century Schoolbook, created outlines around each letter, and chopped up each letter and created a pathway, or a blueprint, of the word ‘echoic memory.’ I later used this method in bookbinding with my own name.

I would like to continue experimenting with this technique in Seminar. Once the letter of a word or name is chopped up and arranged in a certain way, it gives birth to a sort of virtual interior landscape, a labyrinth, a floor design, a world with walls and borders and rooms that continuously flows. I will initially limit my experimentation to flat surfaces, working with the interior spaces created by the lines and shapes, creating zones and exploiting them in various ways.

I may continue the experiment by creating 3D models, or making a a short movie that scrolls through the words.

Identity Crisis

Ever since I started doing graphic design, I have always enjoyed making icons and experimenting with typefaces. For my senior seminar project, I would like to create info-graphics posters that concentrate on unique icons and type usage. The subject/theme of the posters will be the unique and prominent qualities that have to do with my friends. Essentially, I will have a series of biographical posters, concentrating on their identity, unique to each individual person. I will use type to describe and talk about an individual in a creative way, making the poster mainly typographic, and include a prominent icon image of something that reminds especially me of them. My goal is to have a series full of posters that are all individual but linked by the styles and by the fact that they are all posters of my friends.
