…and there they saw five graves, close spaced in a row…
The visitors are Bachtiar and Arifin, Samsoe’s old friends. Bachtiar is now an official, Arifin a doctor. They read what is written on the gravestones —
Pada tiap-tiap kepala koeboer itoe adalah ditanamkan batoe nisan dari pada marmar, jang bertoelis dengan hoeroef air mas; dikoeboer jang pertama tertoelis: Inilah koeboer saudagar Baginda Soeléman mininggal pada tanggal 5 Ramadan tahoen 1315.
¶ Pada nisan jang kedoea tertulis: Inilah koeboer Sitti Noerbaja anak saudagar Baginda Soeléman meninggal pada tanggal 5 Zoe’lhidjdjah tahoen 1315.
¶ Pada nisan jang ketiga tertoelis: Inilah koeboer Samsoe’lbahri anak Soetan Mahmoed penghoeloe Padang, meninggal tanggal 5 Sjafar tahoen 1326.
¶ Pada nisan jang keempat tertoelis: Inilah koeboer Sitti Marjam isteri Soetan Mahmoed penghoeloe Padang, meninggal pada 5 Zoe'lhidjdjah tahoen 1315.
¶ Pada nisan jang kelima tertoelis: Inilah koeboer Soetan Mahmoed, penghoeloe Padang, meninggal pada tanggal 8 Rabi’oe’läwal tahoen 1326.
At the head of each grave had been planted a marble gravestone, inlaid with gold lettering; on the first was written: Here is the grave of the merchant Baginda Soeléman died 5 Ramadan 1315.
¶ On the second was written: Here is the grave of Sitti Noerbaja daughter of merchant Baginda Soeléman died 5 Zoe’lhidjdjah 1315.
¶ On the third: Here is the grave of Samsoe’lbahri son of Soetan Mahmoed Penghulu of Padang, died 5 Sjafar 1326.
¶ On the fourth: Here is the grave of Sitti Marjam wife of Soetan Mahmoed Penghulu of Padang, died 5 Zoe’lhidjdjah 1315.
¶ And on the fifth: Here is the grave of Soetan Mahmoed, Penghulu of Padang, died 8 Rabi’oe’läwal 1326.
Years : 1315 is Christian year 1898; 1326 is 1908. Soetan Mahmoed dies of a broken heart, following the death of his son.
