It is this idea that the celebrated anatomist Peisse has summed up in the sentence that Dr. Paul Richer has placed by way of a motto upon his recent magnificent treatise on Artistic Anatomy :
The eye sees in things only what it looks at in them, and it looks only at that of which the idea is already present in the mind.
