Two pages of code, contained within a small notebook the bulk of which (120 sides) are devoted to a daily log of a trip out of Liverpool departing 24 September 1874, arriving in Rangoon 2 February 1875, and arriving back in Liverpool August 17th 1875. The log records daily weather, longitude and latitude, distance travelled, the condition of the ocean, ships encountered and islands passed.
The balance of the volume includes not one but several knitting patterns, lists of household goods, curtain dimensions, expenses (including "preachers support" and physician), and the make and serial number of a watch.
3.5 x 5.5 inches
These two pages devoted to an ad hoc private code evidence the degree to which code-making was a normal part of communication for at least some individuals.
