It is evident that the prophylactic treatment is of the utmost importance, and consists of careful prepartion of the patient, the maintenance of bodily warmth, prompt checking of hemorrhage, and the avoidance of “puttering” during the operation. As soon as the first signs of shock develop the surgeon should adopt the speediest methods for effecting the object of the operation; in bad cases he may be obliged to bring the procedure to an abrupt close.
