In this way, Basinski’s music also plays into the French composer Erik Satie’s concept of “furniture music”, updated in the ’70s to become Brian Eno’s Discreet Music, which would form the foundation of what we now understand as ambient music. Speaking on furniture music, the composer John Cage said:
“We must bring about a music which is like furniture — a music, that is, which will be part of the noises of the environment, will take them into consideration... To make such a music would be to respond to a need...”
...It raises the question: what role does music play in your life? Are you looking for a pleasant diversion, a soundtrack for reading or puttering around the house? Or do you want to be blown away, washed away in undulating sine waves, like an invisible pyroclastic flow, drowning in the details?
