well before the sun

Morning light dawned bright and clear. Jonathan was up puttering around well before the sun had touched the upper pinnacles. The old man was used to an early start, much earlier, he was sure, than any city kid. He’d play the good host for a while, and let the boy sleep an hour or two, then he’d roust him out for a Sunday breakfast. He slipped quietly across the cabin to the bed and checked on Larry. The man’s color was good and his breathing seemed normal. Jonathan was sure he would be up by afternoon. Although he had hoped that the man would have regained consciousness during the night, he’d seen things like this with mining injuries, and sleep was the best medicine. He’d give it until noon to see what happened with the man.
