Well, Sargent has always been enamored of puttering around a garden somewhere in an alias and old trousers with me to make him lemonade when he gets overheated — and so far I’ve humored him — but I’ve really never thought very much of the idea. That would be — for me — a particularly stupid way of going to seed... Tonight has really made a good many things — clear to me. Things that were moving around in my mind, though I didn’t know quite what to call them.”

The novel treats the situations of young people — flappers among them — out of college, out of war, trying to sort out their lives. Fitzgerald is mentioned in reviews, and W. B. Trites also comes to this mind.

His grandfather and namesake led the Army Ordnance Corps from 1874 to 1891 as a brigadier general and served in the Civil War. His paternal uncle Laurence Vincent Benét was an ensign in the U.S. Navy during the Spanish–American War who later manufactured the French Hotchkiss machine gun.
