I’m more interested in the mundane
...What seems a directorial intrusion of the kind James Houghton would eschew in rehearsal of Curse of the Starving Class is an option granted by the playwright. Hughes says during a break :
I have a confidence about . . . [the play’s] power and structure, having done it once. . . . I can explore what drew me to the play in the first place: the disorienting phenomenon of people puttering around the subject of suicide and making plans as if they were for a vacation or a dinner date. So I’m more interested in the mundane. And “beach ball” seems less mundane than “Frisbee.”
